For Runners Only
We are a region where for many running is not only a way to attain physical fitness, but also the way to a life well-lived. Those who run regularly speak of the exhilaration that comes from running-- what is sometimes referred to as "the runners high." I believe this language of running can help as we reflect on the journey we call life.
Eric Liddell was a Scottish runner who won the Men's 400 Meters at the 1924 Summer Olympics and whose life was portrayed in the 1981 film, Chariots of Fire. In the movie Liddell talks about his faith: "I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure."
This coming Sunday, October 10th, is the Portland Marathon. The Marathon is a race and in the Letter to the Hebrews we read how we are all runners in a race: " . . . let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith." (Hebrews 12: 1c - 2a)
Perseverance and a central focus of faith. Good advice for all of us who are runners in God's marathon.
