Grace Youth Group Holds Successful Valentine’s Day Bake Sale
February 22, 2010 by Esme Culver
Many, many thanks to all who prepared baked goods, hearty stews, soups, quiches and casseroles for the Valentine’s Day Youth Bake Sale. And many thanks to all of you who purchased these delicious treats! Together, we raised $287 which will be used to buy jump ropes and other small playground items for the “I Read Every Day” Camp in Philadelphia, a camp for children in one of the poorest and most troubled neighborhoods in Philly.

Day 3 and 4: The Read all the time Day Camp
There wasn’t much time for hanging around the breakfast table this morning. We had to be at the El Subway station by 8:00 in order to get to our destination by 8:30. (We did however, make the time for a quick run to Starbucks just three blocks away!) We knew that we would be going into a rough neighborhood, but nothing could have prepared us for what we saw today. We truly were in the roughest part of Philadelphia. Drug deals going down right in front of us, loud hard metal music pounding out of cars roaming through garbage strewn, pot holed roads rimmed by weedy sidewalks and boarded up windows. The group was quiet and focused as we made our way to the church for our days work at the camp.

Day 1:
Well we arrived in Philly this morning at about 9:30 (that’s 6:30 am in Portland) after stopping off in Washington DC/Dulles Airport for about an hour. We didn’t get much sleep between us…the flights were very full and the airports crowded, so we managed a little nap here and there. We were met by the Old First Reformed Church Camp volunteers who showed up with a big white van and five cars to drive us into the heart of the old city to Old First. If you want to know more about where we are staying, go on line and see the web site for , Philadelphia.
Larry and Lee Ann Snyder were already on hand to greet us and had thoughtfully brought in cereal, bagels, fruit and juice which we gratefully received.

On June 28, ten youth and six adults from Grace will leave for Philadelphia destined for Old First Reformed Church in the heart of that historic city. During their week they will participate in several service projects including work with underprivileged children, the homeless, and the hungry. While their mission is dedicated to service, there will be time for visiting Philadelphia's landmarks and before leaving they will enjoy Fourth of July fireworks.
